The seminar theme, “Maintaining Your Independence and Making the Right Move” resonated with seniors considering downsizing to an Independent Living (IL) community located in and around Georgetown. On Thursday, Jan. 19, an enthusiastic group turned out at our new location, First Presbyterian Church at 703 S Church St., Georgetown, for a 90-minute presentation.

As a Certified Senior Housing Professional, I employed my knowledge and understanding to moderate a panel of representatives from Independent Living communities in Georgetown and Round Rock. Panelists responded to questions about why people choose or don’t choose Independent Living communities, the types of activities offered in IL communities, and most importantly, panelists addressed common misconceptions about Independent Living and Assisted Living communities. The most common misconception is that IL communities are for “old people and I’m not ready for that.” The reality is that IL communities are for active seniors who desire to replace the cares and responsibilities of how ownership with a more carefree lifestyle. Other issues included:

  • Where do I begin looking for independent living options?
  • What do independent living communities offer me as a senior?
  • What will it cost to live in an independent living community?
  • Are there independent options for purchase? For lease? What are they?

Our Seniors Living Smarter Seminar Series aims to equip, educate, and inspire you to make informed choices and empowered decisions concerning your lifestyle goals. Seminars are presented on the third Thursday of every month at First Presbyterian Church from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. Save The Date For Upcoming Seminars including:
